My research, titled "Black Women Veterans Perspectives on Farmland Procurement Through Federal Programs: A Descriptive Case Study," explores the unique challenges Black women veterans face in procuring farmland for agricultural ventures, particularly in the Southern United States.
The general problem to be addressed is that Black women veterans experience historical patterns of racial and gender discrimination in procuring farmland, resulting in the inequity of resources. Specifically, the underrepresentation of women of color in farmland procurement is theorized to be due to poor access to land and capital. This research will focus on understanding the challenges and barriers Black women veterans face in acquiring farmland and securing necessary resources.
Additionally, findings from this study will help inform policymakers, advocacy groups, and agricultural organizations about the experiences of Black women veterans with legislation (Section 22007 of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 or the Discrimination Financial Assistance Program (DFAP) drafted to ameliorate an aspect of systemic discrimination that has impacted Black women seeking entrepreneurial opportunities in the agriculture industry.
